Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett
The Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, the FAI World Long Distance Gas Balloon Championship, is the oldest and most prestigious event in aviation and the ultimate challenge for the pilots. It is a story full of adventure, skill, courage, survival and luck. The goal is simple: to fly the furthest non-stop distance from the launch site.
The international competition was initiated by adventurer and newspaper tycoon James Gordon Bennett Jr. in 1906, when 16 balloons launched from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, France. Little did the crowd of 200,000 spectators know that this race was to continue throughout the 20th century. The winning team brings the competition to their country.
69th Gordon Bennett
The take-off from Gladbeck, Germany is planed for August 28, 2026.

Distance decides everything. All teams launch from the same field at the same time. ⏱🌎
From that moment on, there is no route and no waypoints. Pilots navigate by selecting different wind layers at different altitudes, where direction and speed can change completely within a few ...hundred meters.
The challenge is not speed, but choosing the right path over time while managing ballast, gas and endurance. Every decision has long term consequences.
What would be the biggest challenge for you as a pilot? 🧭

More than a race. 🎈🏆
A concept that shaped gasballooning. The Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett was founded in 1906 by James Gordon Bennett Jr. with one clear idea: all teams start under identical conditions and only skill, endurance and decision making define the outcome. No ...predefined routes, no waypoints, no external advantages. This principle still defines the race today and is why it is considered the most demanding competition in gas ballooning.
In 2026, this legacy returns to Germany 🇩🇪
What do you think makes a race truly fair? 🤔
